The Sanctity of Human Life

I have always been a Catholic, but long before I put on the habit of a religious, I was married, a mother, divorced and a single parent, but I was also very far from the Truth.

Both of my abortions occurred in the 80’s at my own choosing. I wasn’t coerced or pressured into my decision and there was immediate relief immediately after because my life was back to my definition of normal.

There is an inexpressible bond that takes place between a mother and the child growing in her womb. Not a glob of tissue, but a tiny human being and no matter how much the baby is denied, maternal instinct can’t be denied. It didn’t take long for me to wonder about my sons and what they would look like or who they would grow up to be. The abortions left a void that I tried to fill with selfish and unholy desires. I was one of the lucky ones.

In 2007, I received healing and reconciliation with my sons, David and Joseph, through Rachel’s Vineyard- a ministry for post abortive women. Since then, I’ve become actively involved in the ministry and you have to ask yourself, “If abortion is such a good thing, why are men and women seeking healing, and from what? Guilt, shame, depression, grief, suicidal thoughts, irrational behavior—just to name a few. Rachel’s Vineyard is international and there are countless other healing Bible ministries, but the numbers coming forward are few because of the fear of being “found out”. It is a silent and very lonely grief.

Senate Bill 9 must move forward. We must give women the necessary means to be well informed if faced with a crisis pregnancy. Society says that a woman has a right to choose, but that freedom is in fact taken away when she is left with no choice but to abort.

If we can save one woman or man from the downward spiral of emotions and behavior that abortion will produce and preserve the sanctity of human life, we are that much closer to overturning Roe vs. Wade.
