My life, my mission

  Melissa
Oklahoma,  United States

  I was twenty-five, he was twenty-six.
Old enough to know better.
I called him to come over quick.
Andy, it’s positive.

We were both in shock.
I had been here before,
I was ashamed
And I sunk to the floor.

What will my parents say?
I had an immunization.
It was my next due Hepatitis A.
Andy said abortion.

No way, I can’t do it.
It’s a baby.
It’s murder.
It’s WRONG.

Get out of the Guard.
I’ll stay in.
We’ll both be free from harm.
Andy, I told you NO!

Tried to talk to my pastor.
I’m busy he says.
I talked to a friend; they said
Because it’s medical, it’s OK.

Scheduled one appointment
It was cancelled.
Scheduled another one,
My fate sealed.

May 4th comes.
He picks me up.
We listen to KLOVE.
How crazy is that.

I sign in,
I pee, I pay.
Get me out of here, Lord,
I pray.

We see the doctor.
Is this a good time?
Andy says no.
My thought is yes.

I am led back to a room.
It’s almost time.
Oh dear GOD
Runs across my mind.

I’m prepped for the procedure,
But the nurse can’t get my vein.
Out of the surgery suite,
And back to recovery again.

My veins are ready
I am not
There is one thing
I forgot.

My convictions
My knowledge of right and wrong
What the hell am I doing
Oh Lord, I’m DONE!

I’m done with him.
I can’t do this.
Get me out of here.
It’s too late.

There it is.
My baby is gone.
Oh Lord,
Can I be forgiven.

After running away
I found healing.
A baby girl waiting
In heaven for me.

She doesn’t wait alone.
She has a brother with her now, too
Because of birth control
I continued to use.

Harmony and Dawson this poem
Is my truth.
My life, my mission
To tell my story about you.
