Keeping her Memory Alive

  Dear Mary Margaret,

I have known about you now for 10 years, and I still tear up every time I think of you. You would have celebrated your 39th birthday this year… my little sister. Would you have been the one sibling who would live near me, raising our families together? Would you have been the one to give my kids the joy of growing up with cousins to share their childhood? I mourn the loss of knowing you, my sister, and also the loss of possible nieces and nephews, a lifelong friendship, and the hole that is at every family gathering without you. Mary Margaret, you are loved and missed. Your sister, Kelli.

My mom was single and already had a five year old daughter at age 22. She was embarrassed by another pregnancy and, at the time, thought of the pregnancy as just “a clump of cells.”

Fast forward 28 years and, in 2004, she felt very different about her baby. She went to post abortion counseling, told her family, and now knows God’s forgiveness.
Knowing I was prolife, she was worried that I would hate her for the abortion, but for me it was confirmation that it isn’t something you just “get over.” My mom, who defended abortion “choice” for years and buried her feelings of guilt and regret, couldn’t live with the secret any longer. She is now prolife and has spoken about her experience at gatherings in her community.

Frankly, I have been surprised at how much this news hurt and for how long because I would never have expected to miss someone so much that I never even knew. It has made me determined to keep her memory alive helping others understand how much this is not just one woman’s choice, but that it affects so many others for a lifetime.
And that is why I am Silent No More.
