I Regret My Silence

When I was around 20 a girl in my circle became pregnant by a brief encounter with an old boyfriend she still cared about. Though she didn't seem to want an abortion, she had her current boyfriend to consider (who wanted to marry her, thinking the baby was his). As I didn't know her that well I remained silent when others in the group encouraged her in that decision.

That was some 40 years ago, and I've often regretted my silent cowardice, for it seemed to me that she was really looking for someone, anyone, to tell her that it was okay to have the baby despite the mixed-up circumstances. Without that support she went ahead with it.

So when you ask if I've been impacted by abortion I'd have to say yes. I'm one of the silent majority who've let the horror of abortion continue unabated for almost 50 years. Though I've been active in pro-life efforts from time to time, I will always carry the stamp of cowardice as one who did absolutely nothing when an innocent and helpless life was threatened.
